If you travel via trains even a few times a year, you’ll need to look into the railcards that the UK offers. Most cost around £30 a year but give you a third off all travel. Once you’ve spent £90 in an entire year, you’ve made your money back. Here’s a break down of all the railcards available right now.

As well at the basic stats below, each card gives you different perks such as ‘2 months free of the Gourmet Society Restaurant app’ or ‘ 60% off theatre tickets price’ so check what’s on offer when you buy one.

16-25 Railcard

  • For those aged 16-25
  • Also mature students are also eligible to purchase the 1-year Railcard if over 25 years old and in full time education
  • £30 per year or 3-year Railcard available to buy online for £70
  • Get 1/3 off Standard Anytime, Off-Peak, Advance and First Class Advance fares
  • As long as you are aged 25 at the time that the Railcard is purchased, you may still travel at the discounted fare throughout the validity period of the Railcard, even if you become 26 years old during that time. Likewise, 3-year 16-25 Railcards purchased online up until the day before your 24th birthday will be valid for a full 3 years.

26-30 Railcard

  • Unfortunately, the 26-30 digital Railcard is a trial
  • Valid for those aged 26-30 in East Anglia
  • Save 1/3 on most rail fares to travel across Britain for a year
  • It is available to purchase for limited time only
  • Costs £30 a year

Two Together Railcard

  • For two named people travelling together both aged 16 or over
  • Get 1/3 off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advanced fares.
  • Costs £30 for a whole year.

Friends and Family Railcard

  • Children aged 5-15 get 60% discount on kids fares
  • Up to four adults and four children can travel on one card
  • 3-year Railcard available to buy online for £70
  • Or £30 per year

Senior Railcard

  • For those aged 60 and over
  • 3-year Railcard available to buy online for £70
  • Or £30 per year

Disabled Persons Railcard

  • If you have a disability that makes travelling by train difficult, you may qualify for a Disabled Persons Railcard
  • 1/3 off rail fares across Britain for you and a friend
  • 1/3 off London zones 1-6 off-peak day travelcards
  • 1/3 off Gatwick Express, Stansted Express, Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect Services
  • 1/3 off Oyster pay as you go single fires and daily caps.
  • 3-year Railcard available to buy for £54
  • £20 per year or £54 for 3 years.

Network Railcard

  • For those travelling in the South East aged 16 or over
  • Get up to 1/3 off standard Off-Peak and Anytime tickets for travel in the Network Railcard area.
  • Costs £30 for a whole year.
